Robotic Surgery: Precision Beyond What Conventional Laparoscopy Allows
Robotic gynecologic surgery uses the da Vinci® system — a surgeon-controlled robotic platform providing three-dimensional magnified visualization, wristed instruments with seven degrees of articulation, and tremor-filtered motion — to perform gynecologic procedures with precision that extends beyond what conventional laparoscopic instruments allow. Dr. Andrei uses the da Vinci® system at all four of her affiliated Michigan surgical facilities.
The da Vinci® system has no autonomous function. Every movement is controlled directly by Dr. Andrei from a surgeon’s console. The robot translates her hand movements into precise, scaled actions at the instrument tips. The result is a surgeon who can work with exceptional precision in the deep pelvis — around the bladder, bowel, and major vessels — with a clarity of visualization not achievable through a standard laparoscope.
Dr. Andrei selects the robotic approach when it provides a meaningful clinical advantage for that specific patient’s anatomy and procedure. The recommendation is always based on what best serves the patient — not on defaulting to the more complex platform for every case.
GYN Procedures Dr. Andrei Performs with the da Vinci® System
These procedures are performed robotically at McLaren Lapeer, McLaren Flint, Henry Ford Rochester, or Lapeer County Surgery Center depending on the procedure and patient.
Robotic Hysterectomy
Total or subtotal removal of the uterus using the da Vinci® system — the most common robotic GYN procedure with extensive outcomes data supporting faster recovery and reduced blood loss vs. open surgery.
Robotic Endometriosis Excision
For complex or deep infiltrating endometriosis — particularly near the bowel, bladder, or uterosacral ligaments — the da Vinci® system provides three-dimensional visualization and instrument articulation that enhances excision precision.
Robotic Myomectomy
Fibroid removal with uterine preservation — the robotic approach is particularly useful for deeply intramural fibroids requiring precise multilayer uterine closure.
Robotic Prolapse Repair
Sacrocolpopexy and uterine suspension using the robotic system for cases requiring precise suture placement in the deep pelvis.
Robotic Oophorectomy
Ovary and fallopian tube removal in cases with adhesive disease or anatomical complexity benefiting from enhanced visualization.
Combined Robotic Procedures
Multiple conditions addressed in a single robotic operative session — reducing total anesthesia exposure and recovery compared to staged procedures.
What the da Vinci® System Adds — and What It Does Not Replace
The da Vinci® system is a tool. Its capabilities are only as valuable as the surgeon controlling it. Dr. Andrei is a board-certified gynecologic surgeon with MD, PhD, and FACOG credentials whose entire surgical practice is gynecology. The robotic system enhances what she is already trained to do.
The da Vinci® provides capabilities beyond conventional laparoscopy that matter clinically in the right cases.
- 10× magnified 3D high-definition visualization
- Instruments with 7 degrees of freedom and full wrist articulation
- Tremor-filtered, motion-scaled instrument control
- Smaller incisions than open surgery in all cases
- Same-day or next-morning discharge for most procedures
Dr. Andrei holds da Vinci® surgical privileges at four Michigan facilities, each equipped with the robotic platform.
- McLaren Lapeer Hospital — Lapeer, MI
- McLaren Flint Hospital — Flint, MI
- Henry Ford Rochester Hospital — Rochester Hills, MI
- Lapeer County Surgery Center — 1546 Callis Rd, Lapeer, MI
“The robotic system gives me capabilities that extend what I can achieve through a standard laparoscope — particularly for complex anatomy and procedures requiring precise suture placement. I use it when those advantages are clinically meaningful, not as a default.”
From Consultation to Recovery
Every robotic procedure at Lapeer Women’s Health follows the same structured pathway.
Surgical Consultation
Dr. Andrei reviews your history, imaging, and prior treatments. She explains whether the robotic approach is recommended for your specific case and why, and describes what the procedure involves and what recovery looks like.
Pre-Operative Preparation
Lab work, medical clearance, and any additional imaging are coordinated. You receive specific pre-operative instructions covering medications, dietary restrictions, and what to expect on surgery day.
Surgery and Discharge
You arrive at the surgical facility the morning of your procedure. After general anesthesia, Dr. Andrei performs the robotic procedure. Most patients are discharged the same day or after one overnight stay.
Recovery and Follow-Up
Dr. Andrei sees you at two weeks post-operatively. Most women return to full activity within two to four weeks, with the specific timeline depending on the extent of surgery.
Recovery After Robotic GYN Surgery
Robotic surgery uses small incisions and does not cut through abdominal muscles — recovery is significantly shorter than open surgery.
Most patients go home the same day or following morning. Light walking is encouraged from the first day. Oral pain medication manages discomfort for most patients.
Desk work, short walks, and light household tasks are typically manageable. Driving resumes once narcotic medication is discontinued.
Most women return to full activity within two to four weeks. More extensive procedures may take up to six weeks. Dr. Andrei confirms clearance at follow-up.
Common Questions About Robotic Surgery
The Right Approach,
Chosen for Your Anatomy.
Whether robotic or laparoscopic surgery is appropriate for your case depends on your diagnosis, anatomy, and the procedure. Dr. Andrei explains the recommendation at your consultation — clearly, with reasons.
