IUD: Long-Term, Reversible Contraception — In the Office
An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small, T-shaped device placed inside the uterus to provide highly effective, long-term contraception. Dr. Andrei inserts and removes all IUD types — hormonal and copper — as in-office procedures at Lapeer Women’s Health. No operating room, no hospital, no general anesthesia.
Hormonal IUDs (Mirena, Liletta, Kyleena, Skyla) release low-dose progestin locally, preventing pregnancy and — in the case of Mirena and Liletta — significantly reducing or eliminating menstrual bleeding. The copper IUD (Paragard) works without hormones and remains effective for 10 or more years. Placed within five days of unprotected intercourse, Paragard also functions as emergency contraception with over 99% effectiveness.
Removal is equally straightforward: a brief office visit, no anesthesia, and fertility returns immediately for most patients. Whether you are choosing your first IUD, replacing an expiring one, or exploring a different contraceptive approach, Dr. Andrei will review every option and help you select the right fit.
Good Candidates for IUD Placement
IUDs are appropriate for a wide range of patients including those who have never been pregnant. Dr. Andrei reviews your health history, reproductive goals, and preferences at your consultation.
Seeking long-term, low-maintenance contraception
Women who want highly effective birth control without daily pills or monthly management. A single in-office procedure provides 3–10+ years of protection, fully reversible at any time.
Heavy or painful menstrual periods
Mirena and Liletta are FDA-approved to treat heavy menstrual bleeding. Many patients experience significantly lighter periods or no periods at all within a few months of insertion.
Hormone-free contraception preferred
Patients who prefer to avoid synthetic hormones — including those with certain migraine patterns, clotting history, or personal preference — are excellent candidates for the copper Paragard IUD.
Postpartum or breastfeeding patients
IUDs can typically be placed at the postpartum visit and are safe during breastfeeding. Hormonal IUDs do not affect milk supply. Discuss timing with Dr. Andrei at your postpartum GYN visit.
Replacing an expiring IUD
Removal and same-visit replacement can be performed in a single appointment for patients whose current IUD has reached or is approaching its approved lifespan.
Emergency contraception need
The copper Paragard IUD placed within five days of unprotected intercourse is the most effective form of emergency contraception available — and provides ongoing protection for up to 10+ years.
The IUD Procedure — Step by Step
IUD insertion at Lapeer Women’s Health takes 5–15 minutes from start to finish. No hospital, no general anesthesia, no recovery room. Taking 600–800mg of ibuprofen one hour before your appointment is recommended and significantly reduces cramping.
Preparation
You are positioned as for a pelvic exam. A speculum is placed and the cervix is cleaned with antiseptic solution. Dr. Andrei reviews your IUD selection and answers any final questions before proceeding.
Uterine Measurement
A thin instrument called a uterine sound measures the depth and angle of your uterine cavity. This ensures accurate placement and confirms the cavity can safely accommodate the IUD. A brief cramp is common at this step.
IUD Placement
The IUD is loaded into a thin insertion tube and gently guided through the cervical opening into the uterine cavity. The flexible arms open into the T-shape inside the uterus. The insertion itself takes approximately 30–60 seconds. Cramping is normal and expected.
String Trim and Confirmation
The thin nylon strings are trimmed to an appropriate length inside the vaginal canal. Placement is confirmed. You rest briefly in the office before leaving.
Follow-Up String Check (4–6 Weeks)
A brief follow-up visit 4–6 weeks after insertion confirms correct positioning and appropriate string length. After this visit, no routine annual IUD checks are required — simply continue your regular GYN exams.
